Welcome to the website of Bill Smith, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.
This site provides information about Mr Bill Smith’s background, training, clinical practice (both NHS and private) as well as educational and research interests.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery involves the management of conditions
pertaining to the mouth, jaws, face and neck. Like all other NHS appointed oral
and maxillofacial surgeons, Bill Smith has undergone extensive training in both
dentistry and medicine.
His work is divided between NHS practice at Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital together with private practice at the Three Shires Hospital, Northampton and the Woodland Hospital, Kettering.
Bill Smith was appointed as a Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1994 having obtained Higher Surgical Training in Southeast England prior to his appointment.
Bill Smith is involved in a number of healthcare organisations including Chairman of the Strategic Health Authority’s Committee for the Management of Head and Neck Cancer as well as membership of the Skin Cancer Network. He is Lead Clinician for Head and Neck Cancer at Northampton General Hospital. He is a Fellow of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and a former Surgical Tutor at The Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Specialist interests
Bill Smith has specialist interests in all forms of oral and maxillofacial surgery including:
- impacted wisdom teeth,
- dental implants,
- orthognathic surgery,
- facial skin cancer, and
- salivary gland problems.
In NHS practice, Bill Smith spends the majority of his time managing patients with cancer of the mouth and jaws as well as facial skin cancer e.g. basal cell carcinoma. He carries out an extensive range of reconstructive surgery to the mouth, face and jaws including microvascular free tissue transfer techniques.
